Steelworkers’ union Community has disgracefully agreed to a 50 percent pay cut for workers at steel firm Caparo Merchant Bar in Scunthorpe.
Regional union official Andy McGarrigle said it was “not an easy decision to take”. But he said the union is “hopeful that we can see the company through these difficulties”.
The 150 workers will also take an “extended holiday” over Christmas as production shuts down.
The firm claims the pay cut is temporary and will help it “meet market conditions”.
But trading away pay will encourage the bosses to come back for more.
