Spy exposed in Zimbabwe trial

The defence team in the trial of six Zimbabwe socialists resumed its cross-examination of the main prosecution witness last Monday.

The witness was introduced to the court as Detective Sergeant Jonathan Shoko of the Zimbabwe police. But the defence have produced evidence that he is lying about his identity and is in fact an intelligence agent, Rodwell Chitiyo.

While the court was in recess the state tried and failed to get photos that brought Shoko’s identity into question barred from the trial.

Munyaradzi Gwisai, Tafadzwa Choto, Tatenda Mombeyarara, Edson Chakuma, Hopewell Gumbo and Welcome Zimuto are charged with “conspiracy to commit public violence” for showing a video of the Egyptian and Tunisian revolutions. This carries a maximum sentence of 20 years.

The case was set to resume on Wednesday 14 December.
