Marching against college cuts in Hackney

Students and lecturers marched in Hackney, east London, last Saturday against planned cuts at the borough’s only college.

Hackney College bosses want to impose 10 percent cuts, which many people fear will make the college unsustainable.

One teacher told Socialist Worker, “They want to close courses where there is massive demand, such as the Access to Nursing course.

“I think the government has decided that our students don’t matter.”

Jackie Wade is studying health and social care at the college and had never been on a protest before. “I can’t believe they want to close the only college in Hackney,” she said. “If this college wasn’t here, I’d be on benefits.”

Marchers held placards reading “Sack bankers, not teachers”. Many supporters brought UCU and NUT union banners from outside Hackney.
