PC Simon Harwood trial

PC Simon Harwood has said in court that he was “wrong” to use physical force against Ian Tomlinson at the G20 protests in London in 2009. He was continuing his evidence at Southwark Crown Court.

Harwood, a Territorial Support Group officer, said that if he had realised Tomlinson was walking away from police lines he “would not have gone near him”.

Harwood hit him with a baton and pushed him to the ground. Ian walked 75 yards before he collapsed and later died. Harwood denies manslaughter on the grounds that he used reasonable force.

In cross-examination the prosecutor said that Harwood had “been caught out on video acting improperly.” Harwood replied: “No, I disagree.”
