Members of the local government pension scheme (LGPS) are voting on a deal that could end their dispute. Many on the left in the Unison union are coming under pressure to keep quiet about how bad the deal is.
It would give workers a career average scheme. This means any worker who expects to be promoted during their career will end up worse off.
Perhaps worst of all the deal means workers will have to work until 68. Younger workers could retire even later than that. And it will see those who work longer, paying more over the years to get less at the end.
In exchange for this the deal makes the concession that the vast majority of workers will not pay more in pension contributions. But this is a terrible trade off. Only the union’s higher education group recommended rejection.
But what the union leaders decide is not binding on individual branches. They all have every right to keep campaigning for a “no” vote and to defend pensions.
