Tory housing minister Grant Shapps has backed plans to sell off social housing in “expensive areas”.
The proposal came from right-wing think tank Policy Exchange, whose founders include top Tory ministers Michael Gove and Francis Maude.
The think tank claims that putting the highest-value social housing on the market could generate £4.5 billion. It would also make millions homeless.
Alex Morton, who wrote the report, claimed that expensive social housing is “unfair”. But far from expensive, tenants have paid for the homes many times over in high rents.
Grant Shapps said that only “a perverse kind of leftwing dogma” would make you against this. However the report only “suggests” that the money made should be put back into building new social housing.
This is the latest Tory policy that aims to drive working class people from “affluent areas”. With the Tories it is clear that social cleansing is not just for the Olympics.
