As levels of ice in the Arctic Ocean reached a new record low this weekend, around 40 protesters assembled outside Downing Street, central London, with an “Arctic wake up call” for David Cameron.
The Campaign Against Climate Change, which called the emergency demonstration, is demanding a ten percent cut in emissions every year.
Phil Thornhill, coordinator of the campaign, told Socialist Worker that “with still a month to go before the end of the melting season this isn’t just a new record—it’s a crash.”
The Arctic region is currently warming over three times faster than the global average. Some scientists predict we could be only a few years away from an ice-free Arctic.
“It’s the first really big, visible impact of climate change,” said Phil. “It’s something that transforms how the planet looks and behaves.”
