Protest for Scottish independence

Up to 10,000 people marched in Edinburgh on Saturday of last week on a demonstration calling for Scottish independence.

There were contingents from Solidarity, the campaign for radical independence and Labour for Independence among others.

Scottish National Party (SNP) leader Alex Salmond used his speech to highlight the SNP’s opposition to tuition fees and Britain’s “illegal wars”.

The SNP’s recent backtracking on an exit from Nato had alarmed some of the marchers. Tom, a peace activist from Dundee told Socialist Worker, “We don’t want to be part of Nato and its wars. The SNP cannot be allowed to shelve its commitment to leave Nato”.
