Professor Jason Arday was not hired by the University of Cambridge because the prestigious university has gone “woke”. Jason joined an institution increasingly infected by the poison of the racist right.
He became the target of a far right network steeped in racism, funded by billionaires and seeking a black scalp.
Disgraced former Cambridge academic Nathan Cofnas first raised claims of plagiarism against Jason. Cofnas is a racist who thinks black people are less intelligent than white people.
He openly used terms like “retarded”, “illiterate” and “mentally disabled” to describe Jason.
But those views didn’t stop Cambridge giving Cofnas a job. And they didn’t stop the media repeating his accusations.
Cofnas is not a lone racist. He is part of an organised attempt to embed racism in the prestigious university.
One key actor in this sinister project is James Orr, head of policy for Reform UK. Orr is an advisor to the Free Speech Union, alongside figures including Reform UK’s Matthew Goodwin—known as MattGPT for his use of artificial intelligence to write a book, journalist Julia Hartley-Brewer and right wing historian David Starkey. The Free Speech Union also repeatedly attacked Jason.
Orr is a professor of divinity at Cambridge, having exchanged corporate law for divine law. US vice president JD Vance calls him “my philosopher king”.
Orr discovered god at the wealthy Holy Trinity Brompton Church, which receives funding from Paul Marshall, the billionaire who co-owns GB News and owns Unherd and the Spectator— publications that all joined the pile on against Professor Arday.
He is also close to tech “broligarch” and Palantir CEO Peter Thiel, another hard-line evangelical. Orr invited Thiel to deliver a series of talks, The Antichrist Lectures, in Cambridge in January.
Afterwards Orr gushed, “What a privilege to host Peter Thiel in Cambridge this week for a stunningly original and erudite series of lectures. Thiel is the walking antidote to the modern multiversity. The highlight of our academic year.”
The lectures were held in secret. But in other similar lectures he has suggested that Greta Thunberg is the “antichrist”. Thiel’s lectures draw on biblical passages, Nazi thinker Carl Schmitt, The Lord of the Rings and conversations with tech trillionaire Elon Musk and Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, not exactly the most rigorous of academic sources.
Orr was slammed as racist and dehumanising towards Arabs in October 2023, when he shared video footage of Palestinians protesting for Gaza with the comment, “Import the Arab World, become the Arab World”. Student societies demanded the university “take action” against Orr but nothing was done.
He is using the legitimacy gained from his association with Cambridge to develop international far right networks. His circle centres on an online magazine called Aporia which called the Jason Arday case the “bitter fruit of equalitarianism”.
Aporia is the in-house magazine of the Human Diversity Foundation (HDF), a company that supports the publication of racist, eugenicist fake science.
In 2024, Cofnas appeared at an Aporia event alongside Eric Kaufmann, a Free Speech Union advisory council member, and Aporia co-founder Matthew Frost. The previous year, Frost had attended a neo-Nazi gathering in Estonia known as the “Scandza Forum”.
One HDF employee, Edward Dutton, was fired by the University of Oulu in Finland for plagiarising a students’ work.
The editor of Aporia, Noah Carl, was a research fellow at St Edmund’s College Cambridge. He was sacked in 2019 following an open letter signed by 1,000 people and staff and student protests sparked by his racist views.
A college investigation found Carl’s work “did not comply with established criteria for research ethics and integrity”. On Thursday, Cofnas announced that he had been suspended, pending investigation, from his current role at Ghent University.
It was James Orr who first opened Aporia’s route into mainstream conservative politics at the 2023 NatCon Conference. The summit was attended by cabinet ministers including Suella Braverman, who is now a Reform UK MP, and Michael Gove.
Orr did not give up far right politics to become a divinity professor. He became a professor to promote his far right, racist views, to use the legitimacy of the University of Cambridge to lend credibility to pseudo-science.
He is backed by billionaires Thiel and Marshall, and far right politicians like Vance. They don’t give a toss about academic standards. They are on a mission to rehabilitate the racist eugenics of the past.
Jason Arday was a victim of this far right gang. We have to ensure he is their last.
