The pamphlet talks about equality, domestic abuse and sexual violence
The home office has issued a pamphlet that feeds the far right’s racist lies.
The pamphlet is aimed at those seeking asylum in Britain. It talks about how in Britain women are equal, how domestic violence is a crime and how men must not harass or sexually abuse women.
This might come as news to the millions of women who experience domestic and sexual violence at the hands of British citizens every year.
The pamphlet gives legitimacy to the idea that asylum seekers are a unique threat to women.
Predictably, the racist right has seized on the pamphlet.
They claim it is proof that the government knows asylum seekers are all paedophiles and rapists. And the pamphlet has fuelled demands that all asylum seekers should be deported.
Reform UK’s Zia Yusuf led the charge, posting that the pamphlet was “one of the most insane things I have ever seen”
He claimed the government spreads propaganda saying that asylum seekers don’t pose a meaningful threat to British women and girls. “Well, this disgrace shows you exactly what the government knows.
“They know that they are a menace, and they are living in taxpayer-funded hotels.
“They all need to be detained. They need to be deported.”
The pamphlet warns that asylum seekers could be arrested or go to prison if they carry out physical or emotional attacks on their partners.
There is a section on sex and consent which warns asylum seekers “never try to have sex with someone who is asleep, drunk or unable to consent clearly”. The pamphlet says, “In the UK, the law is clear and strict—both people must agree to sex or sexual contact of any kind.”

This idealised picture of gender equality and freedom from violence is far from the reality for women.
Foreign nationals are underrepresented as a proportion of prisoners jailed in England and Wales when compared with British citizens of similar age.
The University of Oxford’s Migration Observatory found last year that 12 percent of prisoners were non-British nationals. The figure mirrors official statistics that indicate that about 12 percent of the overall population in England and Wales last year were foreign nationals.
But the analysis notes that young adults are more likely to commit crimes and foreign nationals in Britain are more likely to be young adults. The researchers said they would expect foreign nationals to make up 15 percent of the prison population if they had the same imprisonment rates as British citizens of the same age.
If the far right wants to stop domestic violence, they should start with their own. Over 40 percent of those arrested on far right protests have been reported for domestic violence.
Far right politicians are constantly scapegoating asylum seekers for violence against women—and everything else from climate crisis to inflation.
And the state is fanning the flames of the far right’s racist witch-hunts of asylum seekers.
