Marxism festival will be a hub of debate

Hate capitalism and want to change the world? You’ll be in the right place at Marxism Festival this weekend.

Protein Studios in Shoreditch, east London, will be a hub of debate, discussion and organising as over 3,000 people come to our festival.

We’re proud to welcome headline speakers and prominent voices for Palestinian liberation. They include Yasemin Acar, organiser of the Global Sumud Flotilla, and Palestinian journalist Ahmed Alnaouq.

US political commentator Hasan Piker, who was banned from Britain for ­standing with the Palestinian resistance, will join a special panel to discuss repression of the Palestine movement. He will speak alongside Jeremy Corbyn, Yanis Varoufakis, Kwabena Devonish, Ben Jamal, the Filton 25 and more.

And Bobby Vylan—who was targeted after he chanted, “Death, death to the IDF” at Glastonbury last year—is another headline speaker.

We will discuss and analyse Donald Trump’s Iran crisis, growing inter-imperialist rivalry, the rise of regional imperial powers and debate where next for the anti-imperialist movement.

We will reflect on the far right’s ­growing dominance and consider the potential new faces and forms of modern fascism and debate how we fight back.

This year we are excited to welcome ­speakers from across the climate movement. Author Alyssa Battistoni will be discussing her book Free Gifts, and the irreconcilability between capitalism and nature. Matt Huber will offer a Marxist critique of degrowth. M V Ramana, Linda Pentz Gunter and Camilla Royle will be putting forward the case against nuclear energy.

And John Bellamy Foster, perhaps one of the most famous Marxist ecologists, will explore Marx’s ecology in the age of AI.

Beyond mass rallies of hundreds, ­workshops will drill down into history and theory to give socialists the tools they need to understand and change the world.

In Britain and around the world, the political centre ground faces a crisis of legitimacy as it struggles to resolve the deepening and ­interpenetrating crises of capitalism.

With the departure of Keir Starmer only two years after his general election victory, Britain is about to have its seventh prime ­minister in ten years.

New forces of the left and far right, Zack Polanski’s Green Party and Nigel Farage’s racist Reform UK, are ­growing as the two-party system ­collapses. And Labour is looking to “soft left”
chameleon Andy Burnham to reverse its decline.

Marxist analysis allows us to look beyond the immediate drama of mainstream politics and understand the deeper forces shaping today’s crises. Rather than treating crises as isolated, Marxism helps us identify the ­underlying dynamics driving them.

From climate breakdown to war and genocide, to economic instability and the ­erosion of democratic rights, these are expressions of a deeper crisis in capitalism.

At a time when mainstream politics offers only managed decline, reaction or denial, the case for revolutionary politics and ­organisation becomes more urgent.

Against this ­backdrop, we argue that another world is not only necessary but possible.

Marxism is more than a tool of analysis—it is the theory and practice of working class self‑emancipation.

From the general strikes for Palestine in Italy and Greece, dockers’ action in Morocco to the “economic shutdown” in Minneapolis, we’ve seen glimpses of the unique power of workers to take on the system.

And, if you’re inspired by taking part in the ­festival, you should get organised with other revolutionary socialists.

The Socialist Workers Party is not the finished article. But it is a necessary political instrument if you want to deepen resistance into a bigger confrontation against ­capitalism and its horrors.
