Health workers in Tyneside were this week making preparations for an industrial action ballot to defend Yunus Bakhsh, a leading health activist, who has been suspended from work for seven weeks.
Yunus is joint branch secretary of the Unison North of Tyne health branch, he also sits of the union’s national health service group executive. The suspension is an attack on one of the best organised health union branches in the country.
Management’s investigation into Yunus is unravelling. The union has mounted a legal challenge to the suspension, made on the basis of an anonymous letter, backed up by anonymised statements.
Health workers have refused to sign statements they were alleged to have made during “informal” interviews.
Yunus’s fellow joint branch secretary also faces an investigation.
