Thousands of health workers and members of the public marched through Sutton to protest against possible hospital closures.
The march, to defend St Helier hospital, followed a similar thousands-strong protest in neighbouring Epsom in September to defend the hospital there. Speakers at the rally that followed last Saturday’s protest were keen to stress the unity of the two campaigns.
Kevin O’Brien, Unison union branch secretary for the trust covering the hospitals, said, “This march shows the opposition to £24 million planned cuts.
“There are two hospitals—Epsom is also threatened. We don’t want one hospital, we want two.”
Under pressure from the campaign, Surrey County Council has called for a formal public consultation on the cuts.
