JJB sacks key union activist

Issue No. 2029

Managers at JJB Sports are back to their bullying ways, sacking leading union activist Chris Riley.

Last week GMB members at the company’s Wigan depot wrested significant improvements in pay and conditions from management following strike action.

Chris, a GMB rep, was suspended in the run-up to the strike over alleged comments made to non-unionised workers. Non-unionised workers alleged to have made similar comments to workers in the GMB were not suspended.

Chris told Socialist Worker, “After our pay talks, the company said all grievances would be dropped. Subsequently they have reneged on this and sacked me.”

This is a clear attack on union organisation by a vicious company. Union reps were meeting to discuss their next moves as Socialist Worker went to press.
