SPARE PARTS is the title of a film set in Slovakia dealing with one of today's burning political issues. It shows the plight of refugees hoping for a new life in a European country. Films such as Lilya 4 Ever and Dirty Pretty Things have tackled the same theme. What's different about Spare Parts is it concentrates on the 'people smugglers'. Spare Parts shows them demanding high sums from desperate people who they crush into oil tankers and car boots to get to the border.
But the film also shows us Ludvik the people smuggler as a human being with all his faults. He is a man haunted by former glory as a speedway champion whose home town is polluted and decaying. The film shows the harrowing reality behind the newspaper hysteria over 'bogus' refugees.
The witch-hunters from the Daily Mail, Express and New Labour should be put in a room and forced to watch it. The film is finally being shown in London after months of rave reviews at festivals. Hopefully it will get a general release. Make a note of the name and try to see it.
