Ballot on action for decent pay
LOW PAID health workers in North Manchester and Bury hospitals are planning strike action at the start of April. The porters and domestic staff are employed by private contractor ISS Mediclean. The workers, members of the Unison union, overwhelmingly voted for strike action in their ballot earlier this month. They earn just £4.61 an hour, and want to get £5 an hour. That is what similar workers directly employed by the NHS in the same hospital trust earn.
Ready to fight to save pensions
AIRPORT WORKERS' unions are preparing to oppose British Airways' (BA) plans to plug the £1 billion gap in its pension fund. BA employs some 47,000 workers. The company has told them that they must either maintain contributions at the existing level but face reduced pensions or pay an extra 3 percent into the scheme.
BA will make a final decision on its pension fund in April. But Amicus and the GMB unions, which together represent 12,500 BA employees, have rejected the plans.
Bin workers are standing firm
BRIGHTON AND Hove refuse workers have voted to ballot for action over changes in working practices being forced through by the council. The service has only just returned to normal after an unofficial walkout when a GMB shop steward was suspended on gross misconduct charges. Although still suspended, the charges against the steward have been reduced.
Arrests at air base protest
POLICE ARRESTED 29 peace protesters outside the Menwith Hill spy base in North Yorkshire last week. The protest was called by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. CND spokesperson Neil Kingsworth said, 'Although no planes ever take off from the Menwith Hill air force base, it is absolutely key to US war-fighting. The base is used for advance battle planning and monitoring battles.'
Co-op shows a mean face
COMPUTER WORKERS at the Co-op Insurance Society in Manchester were set to strike for 24 hours on Wednesday. The action, by 21 members of the Amicus union, follows a one-day strike last Wednesday. At the centre of the dispute is the pension offered to the workers as part of transferring them to a private firm in an outsourcing deal.
