Journalists in the NUJ union working for Leicester Mercury and Newsquest celebrated winning union recognition before Christmas.
NUJ members at the Leicester Mercury won a 79 percent vote in favour of union recognition at the Northcliffe-owned title.
Local union reps had waged a six month campaign in the face of opposition from senior managers to secure the return of union bargaining rights at the company for the first time in 15 years.
The NUJ has also won recognition at Newsquest (Essex) Ltd via the Central Arbitration Committee.
This covers journalists employed at Basildon Echo, Thurrock Gazette, Southend Standard, Castle Point and Rochford Standard, the Basildon Recorder, the Brentwood and Billericay Weekly News and the Chelmsford Weekly News.
The union had come to an agreement with the company for a voluntary ballot after agreeing a bargaining unit. However, management went back on this agreement and wanted a membership check carried out.
Management behaviour resulted in a surge of union membership.
