Iceland depot strike suspended

Issue No. 2032

The strikes planned at Iceland supermarket’s depot at Enfield, north London, were called off at the end of last month. A majority of T&G union members at the plant accepted an offer from DHL, the company that runs the depot, to restart serious talks on 29 December.

Some 350 Iceland strikers struck and dozens joined picket lines twice last month.

This concession, when previously bosses had said there was nothing to discuss, is clearly a response to fears of the strikes’ impact in the run-up to Christmas.

However, some strikers felt it might also be a manoeuvre to get past the major trading period – after which action might be less immediately effective.

The strikes were in protest at a 2.4 percent pay increase imposed on workers by DHL.
