Tenants vote no to transfer in Taunton Deane and Tower Hamlets

Issue No. 2032

Tenants in Taunton Deane, Somerset, are celebrating victory after defeating proposals to transfer their council houses in a ballot last month. The results of the ballot showed a clear rejection of the transfer proposals—69 percent voted no on a 69 percent turnout.

Meanwhile tenants in Tower Hamlets, east London, have chalked up another victory against plans by the New Labour council to transfer homes to housing associations. Tenants on the Malmesbury estate voted no to a transfer to Old Ford Homes.

The vote is the latest in a string of defeats for Tower Hamlets’ “housing choice” privatisation programme.
