Local government pensions cuts still looming

Issue No. 2032

Negotiations are continuing over local government pensions. There are signs that some unions are willing to accept the latest government proposals, but others seem reluctant to endorse them.

Resistance should continue against plans which will worsen pensions for many workers and raise contributions for all but a few.

The CBI bosses’ organisation is pressing for even more cuts. In his new year message, new CBI president Martin Broughton said, “The government’s patently unsustainable and unfair public sector pension settlement has made it harder for the private sector to resolve problems.”

It is crucial that the unions defend pensions and do not accept a shoddy compromise which will encourage further assaults.
