Teachers, parents and pupils are set to lobby Islington town hall in north London on Thursday of next week, 18 January, at 5.30pm.
The lobby is to take place as the council’s school organisation committee is set to discuss issuing a proposal to close Islington Green School. It wants to reopen the school as a semi-privatised academy unaccountable to the local community.
The proposed closure is opposed by the overwhelming majority of teachers and governors at the school.
The lobby has been called by Islington Unison, Islington NUT and Islington Trades Council. To get involved or for more information phone 07970 870 094.
A protest about school closures in Oldham has been called for Saturday 27 January.
The council plans to close or merge five secondary schools – Counthill, Breeze Hill, Kaskenmoor, Grange and South Chadderton – and open two privatised academies.
Mac Andrassy, NUT union rep at Counthill school, said, “We have joint union meetings at all five schools in the next week.
“People are really angry at the council’s plans so they should be well attended.”
The protest will assemble on 27 January at 11.30am behind Oldham Civic Centre on West Street.
