The ballot papers for the election of the general secretary and national executive members of the new UCU lecturers’ union are due to be sent out in two weeks.
Across Britain branches are organising hustings with the three candidates for general secretary, Sally Hunt, Roger Kline and Peter Jones.
Tom Hickey is standing for the position of president. He told Socialist Worker, “The challenge for activists in the UCU is to get across to members how important this election is.
“It is a battle over the future of the union – whether it will be a trade union with national bargaining, or a professional association that supports individual members and local groups.
“It is crucial to set up meetings to discuss the elections and give members the opportunity to discuss their concerns.
“Out of this must come support groups for Roger Kline and for UCU Left. Wherever the UCU Left has support, every member in that college or university must get regular copies of UCU Left election leaflets.”
Roger Kline’s London launch rally is at Friends Meeting House, Euston Road, on Thursday 18 January.
