The campaign to defend Yunus Bakhsh, a leading activist in the Unison union, is gaining momentum.
Mark Serwotka, general secretary of the PCS civil service workers’ union, has come out in support of Yunus, saying, “It is no coincidence that across the public sector, union reps who resist the mindless logic of the market are being targeted.
“Elected lay reps are the backbone of our trade unions. When employers attack one, they attack the whole movement, and the whole movement must respond.”
Yunus has been suspended from his job as a health worker in Newcastle since September. Yunus’s colleagues see the suspension as an attack on the union.
Yunus’s colleagues, who requested a strike ballot to fight what is seen as a straightforward victimisation, are concerned over the long delay in agreeing such a ballot.
Supporters of Yunus are planning to protest outside his disciplinary hearing on Tuesday 30 January.
