Tube drivers win reinstatement

Tube train drivers on the Northern Line have won an important victory in a battle against the sacking of one of their colleagues.

In November a driver at East Finchley depot with 22 years service was summarily dismissed.

Hundreds of others drivers on the line signed a petition in support. A ballot for industrial action took place over the new year.

Management waited 22 days after the appeal hearing before announcing its result. It is clear that they were weighing up the strength of feeling among drivers on the line.

Just 36 hours before the ballot result was announced, the dismissal was suspended and the driver reinstated.

As one union activist said, “Management seemed to be getting everything their own way. Now they have been told where to get off.”

With major fights over pay and procedures likely on the London Underground over the next few months, this victory has raised morale.

Once again we have shown that a well organised and determined trade union campaign can win real results.
