Condoleezza Rice is fuelling the threat of civil war in Palestine. In a recent visit to Israel the US secretary of state promised $85 million in military aid to the Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas to fight the popularly elected Hamas government.
Abbas’s Fatah movement is hoping that it would be granted an independent state if it puts itself at the service of Israel and the US. Fatah gunmen have repeatedly attacked Hamas despite a continuing Israeli siege of Palestinian territories.
As Rice was pledging support for Abbas, Israel announced it intends to grab more Palestinian land.
Egypt, a major US ally in the region, has been sending weapons and ammunition to Fatah with Israel’s consent.
The Arab governments want the Palestinians to end their uprising against the occupation. Hamas has refused to recognise Israel and repeatedly warned that the US will not deliver an independent Palestinian state.
