Huge anti-war protest set for the US on 27 January

Issue No. 2034

The anti-war movement in the US has reacted with outrage at George Bush’s plans to ratchet up the war in Iraq. It is mobilising for a monster demonstration through Washington on 27 January.

Hany Khalil of the United for Peace and Justice organisation spoke to Socialist Worker.

He said, “There is outrage that after voters elected a Congress to end the war, Bush is threatening to expand it further. Even US soldiers are saying the time has come to end this madness.

“We cannot underestimate the Bush administration’s willingness to start yet another war. The new rhetoric against Iran is in danger of spilling over into military conflict.

“The call for the Washington demonstration is resonating widely, particularly after Bush’s ‘surge’ speech.

“We have coaches coming from every state and major organisations that have not marched up until now are coming are on board too.

“We know it’s going to be big, but we don’t yet know just how big.”
