Shock sentences

Issue No. 1761

OUTRAGE has greeted sentences passed on anti-capitalist protesters who demonstrated in the Swedish city of Gothenburg in June. Luigino 'Gigi' Longo, a 43 year old trade unionist and socialist living in Norway, and Jonas Enander both received sentences of two and a half years. Paul Robinson, a UNISON union member from Britain, was also imprisoned, for a year.

Andreas Ytterstad from Socialist Worker's sister organisation in Norway says, 'Gigi is accused of injuring a police officer with a stone. 'There is no video footage, and not even a police witness to this has been produced. Gigi denies throwing any stone.'

A campaign has been launched to free all the jailed protesters. The Norwegian print workers' union is among those who have already joined the Free Gigi campaign.

Union rep Knut Jensen says, 'We were present in Gothenburg. Sentencing a random demonstrator to several years in prison is an attack against the right to demonstrate.'

Write to jailed protesters at the Gothenburg remand centre: Haktet, Polis Huset, Box 429, 40126 Göteborg, Sweden.
