Young people march in Vicenza

More than 120,000 people crammed into the streets of Vicenza in the north of Italy on Saturday of last week to oppose a new US military base at the Dal Molin airfield.

Rifondazione Comunista, social centres, grassroots Catholic groups, the CGIL trade union federation and the FIOM metal workers’ union had delegations on the march.

Many of these organisations were returning to the streets for the first time since the election of the centre-left government last year. There is growing opposition to the Italian military presence in Afghanistan.
