Lecturers need a fighting union

Issue No. 2040

There are just days left in the election for the UCU lecturers’ union general secretary and national executive.

It is crucial that activists keep campaigning for a vote for Roger Kline in the genereral secretary election and UCU Left for the national executive until the end of the ballot on 7 March.

There are issues such as privatisation and cuts which make it clear why UCU must be a fighting and political union.

Since the management at Dundee university announced plans to make £4 million cuts, a movement uniting trade unionists, students and the public has emerged.

On Monday of last week over 350 students and staff picketed the university’s governing body as it met to discuss the cuts.

A meeting of the Dundee UCU lecturers’ union branch unanimously passed a resolution last week calling for the national union to begin a campaign against redundancies and privatisation.

Lecturers also said they would “write to the university giving it seven days’ notice that Dundee UCU will declare itself in dispute unless it announces that any cuts will not involve compulsory redundancies”.

The motion continues, “If a dispute is declared we call on UCU to ballot members for industrial action up to and including strike action.

“The form of action should be decided upon collectively by members and should be designed to create maximum unity of staff and students.” ?
