Attempt to stifle debate in Unison

Issue No. 2040

Attempts to silence supporters of leading Unison union and NHS activist Yunus Bakhsh took a new turn last week.

Following a tense meeting of Yunus’s North of Tyne union branch – chaired by the regional convenor, Claire Williams – senior steward Tony Pierre attempted to raise a number of questions about Yunus’s treatment and how the branch is being run since being placed in regional administration.

Tony has subsequently found himself a subject of a complaint of harassment and has been summonsed to an investigatory meeting by the Unison region.

“Activists in my branch, which is one of the strongest in the country, will not back off from supporting me, or bow to the leadership that has been imposed on them,” says Yunus.

Following a discussion the branch decided not to nominate Claire Williams or Kenny Bell for the posts of regional convenor and deputy regional convenor respectively.
