P&O

Issue No. 1761

OIL TANKER drivers at P&O are balloting on strikes over threatened pay cuts. A TGWU union spokesperson says more than 100 workers in P&O Trans European's freight division will receive ballot papers.

The row is over new employment contracts which could see wage reductions of up to £5,000 a year. It affects drivers based at Ellesmere Port, West Thurrock, Billingham, Hull, Felling and Stallingborough.

The P&O division delivers to independent petrol retailers and car showrooms. Ron Webb, TGWU national secretary for transport, says, 'Our members are in a dangerous business and carry big responsibilities.

'They deserve to be well rewarded and respected for the work they do. Instead the company is looking to cut their pay. The TGWU is concerned the new scheme may force drivers to cut corners on health and safety to earn a living wage.'
