The campaign to defend leading Unison union and health service activist Yunus Bakhsh is driving those who are attempting to witchhunt him from the union to desperate measures.
Last year the North of Tyne branch requested a ballot for industrial action in defence of Yunus, its joint branch secretary, who had been suspended from his job.
The branch have been told that a report by the Unison region into the ballot request shows little support for action – despite stewards reporting a widespread feeling for a strike.
Normal procedure would see the report discussed at the next meeting of the branch, with the possibility of its own submission to Unison’s industrial action committee.
However, the report itself has been made secret and Yunus’s branch will not be able to discuss it, or its contents.
The union then sent out a letter to stewards informing them that if they were found to be distributing “unofficial material” to members they would be subject to disciplinary action.
This is an attempt to stop activists from spreading information about how the campaign to defend Yunus from both his management and the leadership of his union is progressing.
