Minimum wage

Issue No. 1761

OVER 40 local members of faith groups and trade unions joined a lively lobby of the 'Women in Docklands Ball' last week in support of TELCO's campaign for a living wage for all workers in Docklands. TELCO is The East London Communities Organisation. Tickets for the ball, held in the swish new Four Seasons Hotel at Canary Wharf, cost £100 each.

The lobby drew attention to differences in pay between top executives and cleaners at Canary Wharf based multinationals such as Credit Suisse, First Boston and Morgan Stanley. Many of these companies are cleaned by ISS, which pays cleaners between £4.69 and £5.50 an hour TELCO is campaigning for £6.30 an hour.

TELCO is holding a conference on 'Reclaiming Public Services for the Community in East London' on Saturday 1 September. Speakers include Jean Geldart of UNISON and Professor Allyson Pollock of UCL.
