Tony Staunton: guilty until proven innocent?

Issue No. 2042

Plymouth Unison union branch secretary and leading activist in the area Tony Staunton has appealed against the outrageous decision to bar him from the national executive elections.

Tony is suspended from his elected positions following several allegations which he is strongly contesting.

A disciplinary hearing is scheduled for early April.

Tony is being penalised even before he has had a trial! He is barred from the election even though the Unison rule book contains no such provision.

Barring Tony from standing for office is judging him guilty ahead of the process. It will prevent a democratic contest between Tony and Steve Warwick, national chair of Unison’s Labour Link.

Unison members should protest against this affront to union democracy. It will set a very dangerous precedent if Tony is barred.
