Verdict in the Alder case

Issue No. 1711

A VERDICT was expected this week on the death of Christopher Alder. Christopher, a 37 year old black man, died on 1 April 1998 after being taken to a Hull police station.

The jury saw shocking video evidence earlier in the inquest. It showed Christopher dying on the floor of Hull's Queen's Gardens police station.

Hours earlier he had been arrested by Hull police. He was unconscious by the time he got to the police station. The inquest watched a CCTV video that showed police officers dragging Christopher along the ground into the custody suite.

The video showed him dumped on the ground. An officer bent over him, not to see to Christopher's medical needs but to empty his pockets. Police then turned their backs on him.

The video showed Christopher choking, but the officers ignored him. The CCTV camera caught one officer laughing as Christopher lay dying behind him.
