Norwich bus workers to strike

Issue No. 2047

Around 250 bus drivers at First Eastern Counties in Norwich were set to strike on Friday this week.

The drivers, members of the T&G union, say that the deal currently on offer from the company would actually leave many drivers worse off.

First Eastern Counties is part of the multinational FirstGroup which announced last month that its pre-tax profits for the last 12 months have risen to £157 million. The company’s turnover was over £3 billion.

One driver said, “Lately the focus has been on buses running late, but that could be improved if the drivers were given recognition by the management for the difficult job they do.

“If drivers were properly paid and the relationship between drivers and the company was cordial, then things would be much better.”
