UCU activists meeting on organising in colleges

Last Saturday 35 UCU union members from 18 different London colleges came to an activists’ meeting. It was one of the most exciting meetings that we have had for a long time.

There was discussion about what people will be doing on 1 May – from lunchtime protests to union organised meals – and lecturers have been making links with PCS union members who will be on strike.

The government is planning cuts not only to Esol provision but also a further £25 million cut in funding for adult education in London alone.

Ten colleges have already announced compulsory redundancies.

There are plans for an aggregated ballot across these colleges over the next few weeks – meaning that the colleges will hold co-ordinated strike action, hopefully in June.

People need to be thinking about what action to take in their college if they are facing redundancies.
