As the conference opened, Unison announced a date for the long called for national demonstration in defence of the NHS – Saturday 13 October.
Many delegates were excited about the chance to unite hundreds of campaigns against hospital closures and cuts in a monster national demonstration in London.
Health executive member Karen Reissmann told a fringe meeting of the United Left grouping in the union that activists needed to seize the opportunities won from the union’s leadership.
“We have to build this demo like we built the big Stop the War marches,” she said. “We need stalls in every high street, and public meetings in every city, town and village. We must ensure that our union branches are laying on transport for their members, and subsidising transport for the public.
“If we can unite the thousands of people who have protested around the country with the trade union activists, we can really turn the heat on the government and win.
“This demonstration has to be spectacular and we are the people who can do it.”
Radiographers to challenge staging of pay
The annual conference of the Society of Radiographers has voted to call on its executive to do “as much as possible” to stop the staging of NHS pay. Delegates also voted to “consider further action” over pay.
