FORD WORKERS returned from their summer shutdown last week and within days anger boiled over into action. The Paint Trim and Assembly plant at Dagenham in Essex saw two unofficial stoppages by groups of workers.

The protests were over changes in working conditions, but also raised the issue of proper shop steward representation. This comes as Ford workers are waiting to hear when the strike ballot promised by TGWU union national official Tony Woodley over the company's plan to shut down car production at Dagenham will be called.
