Harlow college: 'Everyone must now reapply for their jobs'

Issue No. 2049

The 205 lecturers at Harlow College in Essex are holding a strike ballot after management announced redundancies and changes to terms and conditions.

On the day the college broke up for Easter, staff were told that if they wanted to continue working there, they must reapply for new posts. Some of these carry salaries £13,000 a year lower than at present.

There would be no 'normal hours of work' and staff would be expected to teach a minimum of 37 hours between 8am and 10pm Monday to Friday and 8am and 2pm on Saturdays.

One of the lecturers at the college told Socialist Worker, 'The depth of these attacks is unheard of – and there is a feeling that this is almost a test case, so management can see how far they can push us.

'The support that we have been receiving is uplifting. It is really boosting people's confidence that this is a fight we can take on.

'Students at the college are actively involved in the campaign to defend lecturers.'
