National Union of Journalists members at Newsquest-owned titles in Bradford struck for half a day last week over low pay. NUJ president Rory McLeod joined the picket lines. There were also NUJ delegations from Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham and Coventry.
Newsquest is owned by the American media giant Gannett. The NUJ has only recently won back union recognition at Newsquest. 'The company is fabulously profitable but our members do not see any of it,' said one striker.
On the day before the strike management said they could raise the minimum trainee rate from £10,500 to £12,000. The company also promised to 'consider' improvements to sick pay and holiday entitlement and the introduction of proper pay bands. Union members voted to strike by 29 votes to nil after the company refused to firm up its 'considerings'.
