Media's criminal neglect of truth

Issue No. 1792

THE MEDIA is whipping up hysteria over crime and ignoring three simple facts:

  • The British Crime Survey reports that crime has fallen by 33 percent in the last five years.
  • Violent crime fell by one fifth between 1999 and 2000, which is the last year for which figures are available.
  • The rise in street crime is largely down to the rise of mobile phone thefts. Most mobile phone thefts do not involve violence. People report their phones stolen when they are left in public places.
