Some 40 Lambeth council workers in special housing services held a second day of strike action on Tuesday of last week in protest at the sacking of Unison steward Alex Owalade.

The union branch's annual general meeting voted last month to ballot all the housing directorate for action and build for a branch-wide ballot to escalate the dispute.

Hackney council's plan to close Clapton Library has been defeated. The Labour group backed down this week and agreed to a proposal that would ensure 'continued provision' of the service.

At recent meetings local people have spoken out against the council's plan to sell off the library.

Some 50 housing workers in Waltham Forest held a march on Wednesday of last week in protest at the transfer of 32 jobs to private housing company London Quadrant. Around 30 workers lobbied a council meeting the next day. Unison members are currently being balloted for strike action against the cuts.
