Don't let Nazis exploit tragedy

Issue No. 1788

Nineteen year old Gavin Hopley died last week from injuries he received the previous weekend. He was beaten in Oldham, north west England. Police have arrested two men and are looking for others in connection with the killing.

The men arrested are Asian. Now Nazis from the British National Party and National Front are attempting to exploit the tragic death and whip up racial tension.

The NF tried to invade Glodwick, the main Asian area of Oldham where Gavin Hopley was beaten, the day news of his death was released. Their aim was to create division and violence which would lead to more deaths-black, white and Asian. The BNP has targeted Oldham.

It has tried to poison relations between all ethnic groups in the town. It is threatening to use Gavin Hopley's death in its sick campaign. Unity Most local people do not want that. They want unity and an end to violence. The Anti Nazi League was putting that message clearly last weekend.

An Asian family took Gavin Hopley in off the street and cared for him while an ambulance arrived. It is that kind of basic human response that the Nazis hate.
