Gordon Brown moves to attack civil liberties

Issue No. 2054

Last weekend prime minister-to-be Gordon Brown announced plans to hand a host of new powers to the police under the pretext of “anti-terrorism”.

These included resurrecting proposals to detain people for up to 90 days without charge. MPs threw out these internment proposals in November 2005.

Yet astonishingly the mainstream media – including the supposedly “neutral” BBC and “liberal” Guardian – reported this as a “Brown pledge to defend civil liberties”.
