Teachers are also angry over pay. Kevin Courtney is a member of the NUT teachers' union national executive. He told Socialist Worker, 'Education secretary Alan Johnson's evidence to our pay review body for September 2008 was insulting.
'He said that if teachers got a pay increase of more than 2 percent, the children who needed special individual tuition would lose out. This is just moral blackmail.
'Johnson also refused to reopen the 2007 teachers' pay deal, even though inflation is well over the 3.8 percent trigger for such a move.
'If they won't re-open the pay deal, then the teaching unions should be working together to ballot their members for action.
'If the teaching unions can't organise together then the NUT should ballot alongside the PCS and Unison to have united action over public sector pay.'
