The Socialist Alliance is to contest a by-election in Ipswich. The parliamentary seat was made vacant by the recent death of Labour MP Jamie Cann.

Peter Leech, an unemployed builder and known local activist, is standing for the Socialist Alliance on a platform of 'Welfare not warfare'.

The Socialist Alliance is also standing in two local council by-elections in Burnley in the north west of England on 22 November.
