Issue No. 2057

Over 120 lecturers came together for the UCU Left conference in London last weekend.

Left wing Labour MP John McDonnell spoke at the opening session. He told the meeting, “We should all understand what it means when Gordon Brown takes over as prime minister on Wednesday.

“This is the man who has called on all of us to become ‘evangelists’ for the world market.

“Brown’s ideology is about privatisation. New Labour has prised open the welfare state – opened it up to the market.

A speaker from the Socialist Teachers Alliance talked about the importance of linking up the union campaigns over pay. He said, “The NUT won’t win over pay unless it fights alongside other unions.”

Meetings at the conference included discussions over what the left in the union should do about Esol cuts in English language classess, privatisation, pay and political campaigning.
