Respect backs pay fight

Issue No. 2057

Around the country groups of Respect supporters are preparing to give striking postal workers their full support.

Councillor Michael Lavalette spoke to Socialist Worker about the political impact that the post strike will have.

He said, “It’s appropriate that the end of Brown’s first week as prime minister is marked with a strike by public sector workers.

“Brown has been the architect of the public sector pay limit which will see workers’ standards of living fall in real terms.

“Postal workers are some of the lowest paid employees in the public sector.

“They deserve a decent pay award – and the Labour government should also remove the threat of privatising the Royal Mail.

“On these two issues, privatisation and pay, the CWU is at the vanguard of a campaign that is likely to engulf large sections of public sector workers later this year.

“All those committed to building a new left should give all possible support to all those taking action.

“Respect members will do everything in their power to make sure that the post strike delivers a knock out blow to New Labour.”
