Union organises disciplinary hearing for Tony Staunton

Issue No. 2058

Tony Staunton, former City of Plymouth local government Unison branch secretary and one of the best known activists in the union, faces a union disciplinary hearing on Monday.

It will involve lurid allegations of union resources being used for political ends.

Tony has consistently argued, backed by a wealth of evidence, that a computer and a phone were given to him by the branch for union and personal use.

He received these items instead of the much larger honoraria payments he could have accepted.

The allegations meant that Tony was suspended from the union and was not able to stand in the recent national executive elections.

Many Unison members believe he would have won if he had been cleared to stand.

These investigations come at a time when Unison faces huge challenges – over pay, the implementation of the single status agreement, privatisation, defence of the NHS and much else.

It is outrageous that energy that could be harnessed in these struggles should be wasted in inquires which sap the strength of the union and discourage active involvement.

On Monday 9 July, the Friends of Tony Staunton are organising a lobby to wish him good luck. Meet 8.30am at the Holiday Inn, Armada Way, Plymouth, and bring your banner. Send messages of support to tonystaunton@blueyonder.co.uk
